You are behind the white house. A path leads into the forest to the east. In
one corner of the house there is a small window which is slightly ajar.

The Zork series is one of the most famous adventure games of all time.

Developed in the late 70s by a group of MIT hackers, Zork uses a text based interface and a very well written storyline in favor of flashy high-resolution graphics.  After discovering how powerful this new medium could be, these programmers went on to found a company called Infocom.  Over the next decade, they released dozens of interactive fiction adventures for computer platforms, some graphical and some text.  The most memorable, of course, was the Zorks.

After a merger with Activision, Infocom slowly broke apart until there was nothing left but the label.  Although Activision continues to release quality graphic-based adventures based upon the Zork universe, the only way to replay the old classics is to try to find an anthology release called The Lost Treasures of Infocom.  Any more, the collection packages are almost impossible to find since production on them has long since ceased.

Thankfully, with Activision's release of their third graphical Zork game, Zork Grand Inquisitor, the three original Zork text adventures have been released into the public domain.  Additionally, the original authors of the Zork adventures put together a whole new game, Zork: The Undiscovered Underground!  All the games are exactly the way they were before, the same commands, same story!
