First off, this is
not a programming book. It is not a reference manual. It is not
a history of computers. What it is, however, is the definitive guide
to the nature of computing, how the circuitry works, the logic behind it,
how electricity functions, and everything else you ever could have possibly
wondered about. Petzold assumes no previous knowledge about the function
of computers and goes from an extremely high-level overview, to an in-depth
description of the nature of logic, transistors, and the design of basic
function computing circuts. If you were to build a logic circuit from
scratch, this is the book to read. If you are just curious as to how a
calculator works, this book will explain it.
This is the most fantastic book on computing that has ever been written,
and I've read a lot of books on the subject. Every person who
is even mildly interested in the mysterious fundamentals behind the
technology you use in everyday life, this is where you need to be.
