Memento earns the distinct honor
of being the most original and imaginative movie I have ever seen. Memento
stars Leonard, a man who has lost the ability to create new memories.
He can remember everything up until his 'accident', a sharp blow to the head
during a midnight attack on his house by an unknown killer. How long
has he been wandering the streets looking for his wife's murderer? No
one knows, not even him. Never quite sure where he is headed, or where
he just came from, the entire movie is told from the ending backwards.
Unable to retain memories, Leonard relies upon an extensive series of notes
and photographs to document his quest to avenge his wife. These notes
must be constantly reviewed, as he cannot remember them for more than a few
minutes at a time.
Can he trust advice given to him? Can he trust his notes, have they been
altered to throw him off track? Can he even trust himself?
Characters and plot developments are introduced in reverse, a
reaction without a known cause. It is a stunning method to tell
a story, and it effectively leaves you as bewildered as Leonard, from the
end, right up to the start, when it all comes together in one absolutely
beautiful opening scene.
This is one movie you will have to watch twice.
