Planet Dognine Reviews : Super Smash Brothers Melee (Gamecube)

Own a Gamecube?  You must own this game!

Super Smash Bros. Melee has dozens of characters from various Nintendo worlds, all thrown together in an all-out-brawl, that not only makes for a fantastically fun party game, but doesn't skimp on the single player experience either!

The controls are fairly simple to learn, but the individual characters do take some time to master.  I'm not a fan of the Soul Caliber type of fighting game where each character has a hundred 'special' moves that take five seconds of insane button mashing to pull off-- all the moves in SSBM are done with the combination of two buttons and eight directions on the D-Pad.  While it might sound overly simplistic, each character has completely unique moves, and for the most part, they are all very balanced.

A rounded character like Mario excels at quick strikes and defense, while Ganon is a hard hitter that, when timed properly, can inflict massive damage on a foe.  As I said before, they are all very well balanced, and no one character has much of an advantage over the other.

Additional characters are unlocked in a variety of methods.  If you play the single player missions (And there are a lot of them), you unlock stages and characters by beating various aspects of the solo mode.  There is the traditional "Fight one character after another until you get to the last guy", the Event mode, which has discrete story lines and widly unique rules.  For example, in the event mode, one moment you might be a super small midget fighting an extra large giant bowser, and the next you might be partnered with a computer teammate against an exceptionally tough opponent.

Alternatively, if the single player missions are too time consuming (or difficult), characters and stages are automatically unlocked simply by playing a large number of multiplayer matches with your friends.

Topping it off is a pretty neat reward system of trophies, which you can examine and read descriptions about.

Purchase, do not rent, this game.
