A terrible heat smothers the
land, and Nynaeve, Elayne, and Aviehenda are tracking down the one item that
can save the world. Most of the book centers around this subplot, and
there are a lot of interesting character developments that I don't want to
spoil by telling them in this review. Basically everyone becomes a
little more friendly with one another, which has been my biggest complaint
with the series for some time-- everyone is so damn grumpy all the time.
The ashaman are starting to come into their own light, and Elidia in the
White Tower is effectively setting herself up for the downfall you knew was
bound to come.
A trend in the series seems to be making them a little bit shorter here
and there. While the first few books were often 900-1000 pages, this
one tops in at a more reasonable 700 pages, and things move at a brisker
pace. This combined with good dialogue and character interaction,
along with the token 'last-150 pages of action', makes it a good addition to
the series.
