Fans of the old Commodore 64/128, fear not! Relive the glory days of home computing through the wonders of emulation! You may have mistakenly believed that you've seen the last of these antique wonders of a computing era gone by.. but no! The Commodore 64 scene never completely died off, it has lived on through the Amiga computers, diehard hackers, the demo-scene, and more recently through the use of emulators! What are emulators? Emulators are programs which copy the operation of another machine. Although not perfect, emulators are becoming more and more sophisticated, oftentimes modeling circuitry at the microcode level, imitating timing, command sets, and even the flaws in the original system. If you know where to look on the Internet, you will find a community that is very much alive and keeping itself busy, archiving and cataloguing the software of the past.. So how do you get started? |

The first step is to choose an emulator. In this case, the emulator is a program that runs on your Windows system and acts as a virtual machine. There are a number of emulators to choose from-- some model the system more accurately at the cost of speed and performance, while others offer C128 & Vic support, while others emulate particular aspects of the system very well where others might leave off. Don't be surprised to find yourself switching emulator software, trying to get an especially picky piece of software to work. Thankfully, as emulators are becoming more advanced, and newer techniques being developed, the need to have multiple emulators on your system is becoming greatly decreased. | |||

Secondly, find some software! Don't worry about digging out those old floppies, other C64 Internet enthusiasts have already gone through the process of converting your programs into a usable format. Although, if you're into hardcore emulation, instructions for creating a cable for hooking up to your 1541/1571/1581 drive can be found at The Star Commander website. For convenience, I have mirrored some of the software locally. Emulators
